ISLAMABAD - Alif Ailaan Taleemi Karavan that set out on August 26 ended its five days long journey after travelling 1,578-km through 14 districts of Punjab.
The caravan received an overwhelming response as it spread the word about the right to free education for every Pakistani child between the ages of 5 and 16.
Currently, the Punjab government is conducting a mid-year enrolment drive in Punjab to enrol children who may otherwise not be brought into the education system this year.
"Everywhere we went, there was a consensus on ensuring education for all," said Musharraf Zaidi, Alif Ailaan team leader. "No parents want to deprive their child of education, yet there remain to be many hurdles in the way of achieving of 100 per cent enrolment. Politicians need to translate political will into action and assume responsibility of their constituency so that no child is left out of school this year."
The convoy of five decorated vehicles drove to the districts of Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Okara, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Jhang, Muzaffargarh, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur before returning to Islamabad. The Taleemi Karavan stopped in key towns and cities along the GT Road, where Alif Ailaan partners and network coordinators engaged with parents, children, teachers, lawyers, journalists, local politicians and community notables. The campaign was able to get roaring support of the masses as well as of politicians.
